before | contact | diaryland | mmm...bed Subject: what i have learned about music from my family by playing various CDs while we hung out: lyle lovett is "good," "cerebral." we play both of his cds that i have with me, two times apiece. elvis costello is: frown. "change this, please." pedro the lion: "much better!" several songs later: "this is NICE music." portishead, everyone is nodding, tapping, humming along. at almost the end of the cd, my mom: "this woman's voice is really annoying me." american analog set: my niece is dancing along. after a while, my brother picks her up and they dance together. several songs later, my mom: "what are they Doing with their instruments? change this, please, now." and then makes grumpy sounds all the way as i go to change it. "ick, oh, just awful." beck (mutations): "can you turn this down?" but again my niece is dancing happily. (proving that kids know better.) |
